China starts work on longest undersea high-speed rail tunnel

04-11-2024

China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) has announced that work has begun on the world's longest undersea high-speed rail tunnel project, which on completion, will establish the first-ever rail connection to the Zhoushan Islands, integrating them into China's national rail network.

The Jintang undersea tunnel, a key component of the Ningbo-Zhoushan Railway project, stretches 16.18 km, with 11.21km being bored using shield tunneling technology, said CRCC in a statement.

Two custom-built tunnel boring machines (TBMs) - Dinghai and Yongzhou - began operations from opposite ends in May this year, it added.

These machines, built by CRCC, are designed to tunnel through challenging conditions, including high water pressure and complex geological formations, before meeting precisely underneath the seabed.

A key milestone was achieved recently with the Dinghai TBM breaking through the seawall to begin underwater construction 42m below sea level.

The tunnel represents a significant step forward in promoting regional integration between Ningbo and Zhoushan while significantly contributing to the coordinated development of the Yangtze River Delta region.-TradeArabia News Service
