Tenders are expected to be announced next month for the construction an estimated $65 million-plus twin-tower complex to house the country’s radio and television corporation.






Qatar-based portacabin specialist Aal Imran Housing has recently started producing a new type of prefabricated units using glass-reinforced cement (GRC), which offer a host of benefits. The units are well insulated against sound and heat radiation.






Rapid Access – said to be the largest and fastest-growing supplier of powered access in the Middle East – has been gearing up its Qatari operations with a view to expanding its interests in the region.






Over the past 33 months a barren stretch of land next to the Doha Sheraton in Doha’s prestigious West Bay area has been transformed into a massive mixed-use development including a five-star hotel, a state-of-the-art residential apartment complex, an office tower and 20 town houses.






Qatar’s United Development Company (UDC) is set to launch a new $2.5 billion project which will offer buyers of any nationality the opportunity to own freehold property on an artificial island. The 400-hectare Pearl of the Gulf island  is to be built off the shoreline of Doha Bay.






Qatar can be ranked next after Dubai in the number of mega projects – many of them $1 billion-plus – which are set on the drawing boards or just getting off the ground. While it cannot compete with the pace at which the UAE emirate is launching projects, it certainly appears to have set the cogs of the industry abuzz with activity.






Tenders have been issued for a one-of-a-kind medical facility which will afford elite athletes an opportunity to rehab sports injuries, fine-tune training regimens and even kick back for a little rest and relaxation.






A NUMBER of contracts are due to be awarded shortly to push work forward on the estimated $450 million Athletes Village (Olympic Village) which will house more 10,000 athletes, for the 2006 Asian Games in Doha.






Construction work is under way in Doha on the West Bay Resort and Hotel, owned by the Tourism Development Company. The two-phase project, which is due for completion by mid-2005, will comprise a 350-room hotel and 70 villas.






Ground is due to be broken this month for the new Doha International Airport (NDIA), a three-phase project that will eventually be able to handle 50 million passengers a year, and be the first new airport in the world to be designed to accommodate the ‘superjumbo’ Airbus A380-800.
