WITH the start of construction work  on the Dubai World Trade Centre District in Dubai, Liebherr tower cranes have swung into action on the project. The first phase of the redevelopment, being undertaken by the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), was awarded to  Al Jaber Engineering and Contracting (Alec) in May last year at a value of Dh3.






Rubber prices rise 15pcThe average price of rubber raw materials across the globe has risen by 15 per cent in 2009, says Rubber World Industries (RWI), a UAE-based leading manufacturer of closed-cell rubber insulation, and part of the Memon Group of Companies.






BELIMO, a Swiss manufacturer and distributor of electric actuators for motorised control devices in heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, has launched a hi-tech training facility and knowledge centre in Dubai. The move is aimed at increasing safety awareness in the region.






RAK Ceramics has launched a new brand of 4.5-mm-thick tiles that is said to set a new industry benchmark in thickness, strength, cost, and ease of use. Called Rakslim, the trend-setting product line will initially be offered in some models of gres porcellanato tiles, including the Lounge Series and the New Port Series.






ARABTEC has won a contract worth Dh687 million ($187 million) for the construciton of the Onyx Towers located on Sheikh Zayed Road, next to Emaar Business Park, in Dubai.

DESPITE the global slowdown, the UAE continues to be one of the most active construction markets in the world with more than 750 active projects in construction and 450 recently completed, according to a new report by Dubai-based research house Proleads Global.






AL HABTOOR Leighton Group said getting paid in Dubai remains “challenging” as the financial crisis curtails lending. “Definitely payment, primarily in Dubai, has been very challenging,” managing director David Savage said.






OMNIYAT has awarded the main construction contract to build The Gemini Tower to China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC). The Gemini, a freehold commercial tower located on a prime waterfront location in Dubai Business Bay, is set to make mark on the city’s skyline.






A KEY construction milestone was reached last month at Dubai Pearl with one of the Middle East’s largest foundation rafts being installed at Tower 1 of the world-class,  luxury development in Dubai. Each of the four towers at Dubai Pearl will have a foundation slab 3.25 m thick and 3,072 sq m in total area.






THIS month will cap 41 years of success for the UAE-based Tiger Group, which was founded by Lebanese chairman Robert Nasr and his brother Aziz. Today, the group enfolds a range of specialised and full-fledged companies serving the construction industry.

GULF TECHNICAL Construction Company (GTCC), the civil contracting subsidiary of Drake & Scull International (DSI), has been awarded a Dh250-million ($68 million) contract for the KPM Tower in Dubai Marina, in Dubai.
