Bids in for Saudi university jobs

TWO major construction contracts at Hail and Taibah universities in Saudi Arabia have attracted low bids worth a total of almost SR4 billion ($1.06 billion).

The local Abdul Rahman Al Rashid and Sons submitted the lowest bid of SR2.4 billion ($639 million) for staff housing at Hail University.
The contract includes the construction of 737 villas with a built-up area of 557,300 sq m, and a further 98 buildings with a built-up area of 242,000 sq m. In total, the site covers 4.5 sq km.
A total of nine firms submitted bids for the project.
At Taibah University near Madinah, 12 firms submitted bids to build staff housing. The project comprises the construction of 629 villas and a further 24 buildings covering a total area of 4 sq km, and the local International Centre for Commerce & Contracting submitted the lowest bid of SR1.5 billion ($399 million).
The Higher Education Ministry is the client for the works at both universities.
In the 2009 Saudi budget, which was announced last December 2008, SR122 billion ($32.53 billion) was allocated for spending on education and manpower development, with funding to build 1,500 schools and rehabilitate 2,000 existing educational facilities.
