THE UK-based Lytag has signed an agreement with Bulk Materials International (BMI) for the marketing of Lytag lightweight aggregate (LAW) in the Middle East.
BMI Middle East will market the product in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Yemen. It will also manage sales and provide technical support across the region.
Dr Vassiem Sheikh, regional director at BMI (Asia/Middle East), says: “This agreement is a decisive opportunity to accelerate our development strategy in cement-based products in the Middle East and allows us to explore new market segments with Lytag.”
Gareth Moores, executive chairman of Lytag, says: “This is an exciting step for Lytag in our expansion throughout the Middle East. Lytag LAW has already been used in projects in the region such as Sheikh Rashid terminal in Dubai International Airport and the Emirates Aluminium (Emal) smelter in Abu Dhabi; and this agreement will facilitate a far greater availability of the material across the Middle East.”
Lytag LAW is a secondary material that is commonly used in a range of construction applications including structural and precast concrete, floor and roof screeds, fills, green roofs, and as a drainage medium. Its weight is approximately 50 per cent of the weight of natural aggregate, resulting in a saving in density of around 25 per cent over normal weight concrete, while, retaining the same structural integrity. This characteristic offers clients, engineers and architects significant advantages in terms of design flexibility, logistics and handling; add to that savings in terms of labour, time and costs.
A truly environment-friendly material, Lytag aggregate enhances the sustainability credentials of a construction project. Manufactured from the by-product of coal-fired power stations, its use reduces demand on quarried aggregate and also diverts waste material from landfill.
BMI is a leading supplier of products and services to the cement and construction industry. It offers more than 20 products, ranging from iron oxide, to alumina products, to coal ashes and gypsum and is one of the leading global suppliers of granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS). It is also one of the industry’s primary sources of market information, technical support and services, with full logistics capabilities, including shipping, rail, barge transportation and trucking.
The company serves customers around the world from several US regional offices, including its headquarters in Newtown, Connecticut, and a growing network of offices in Italy, the Middle East, and Singapore.
Lytag has been supplying the unique Lytag LWA brand for over 40 years and has sold over 16 million tonnes of the material.
