Atlas powers courthouse contract

01 September 2009

AN Atlas Copco XAVS 307 oil-injected screw compressor is currently being employed for general work at the construction site of what will be Istanbul’s new Halls of Justice by 2010.

With a free air delivery (fad) of 310 litres per second at 14 bar, the XAVS 307 offers the highest capacity of any single-axle-trailed Atlas Copco compressor, says its Belgium-based manufacturer. With its Caterpillar engine, it is characterised by very low noise and exhaust emissions and few moving parts. The practical design of the unit allows easy service and maintenance access and the engine output at a rated speed of up to 186 kW adapts automatically to air demand.
The new courthouse complex, which covers an area of 343,000 sq m in the Caglayan Sisli area of Istanbul, is said to be the most expensive building project approved to date by Turkey’s Ministry of Public Works and Settlement, with overall costs put in the region of 283 million Turkish liras ($189 million).
The 82,000 sq m main court building will be seven storeys high with seven basements consisting of a total of 326 rooms with 73 lifts and 48 escalators, ensuring access around the court is swift and easy.
The main contractor for the work is Istanbul-headquartered Varyap.
Foundations for the project have been laid following the initial excavation of 1.2 million cu m of earth, and the project is currently at the concreting phase.
Civil engineer and project manager Sevim Özyurt says the new Halls of Justice building will require a total of some 37,000 tonnes of iron and 250,000 cu m of concrete and employ around 1,000 people working for both Varyap and its sub-contractors.
