Dubai Mall opts for Draka cables

01 November 2011

DRAKA, a leading designer and manufacturer of fire performance cables, zero halogen power cables and building wires, has supplied more than 20 km of fire-resistant cables to boost fire safety at the four-storey Dubai Mall in Dubai, UAE.

Spread over 1.12 million sq m, the world’s largest shopping mall – which attracts more than 40 million visitors a year – opted for Draka’s premium fire-resistant cables including its FTP power cables, Firetuf FT30 alarm cable and Firetuf FT Sifer power cable.

Dubai Mall, developed by Emaar Properties, is part of the huge $20-billion Burj Khalifa complex, and includes world-class leisure and entertainment facilities and 1,200 shops.

The decision to opt for Draka was influenced by the need to ensure integrity, in the event of a fire, of the cable supplying essential power to key fire safety systems and equipment.

Draka’s marketing services manager Mark Froggatt said the cables selected for the fire alarm system, the public address system, smoke detection installation, fire suppression sprinklers and the standby power supply, along with those specified to supply power for the emergency extract fans and fire curtains, meet the highest standards.

Another major advantage in using Draka cables was the ease of installation, says Froggat, adding that Firetuf FT30 is noted for offering the fastest sheath removal, small bending radius and easy dressability.

Additionally, all of the Draka cables are OHLS (halogen free, low smoke) which means they do not emit halogen gases and burn without producing large amounts of dense smoke.

Draka’s other recently completed projects in Dubai include the new headquarters of the Dubai Silicon Oasis free-zone technology park, the 25,000-spectator Dubai Sports City Cricket Stadium, and the Entrepreneur Business Village.
