Cat telehandler boosts productivity

Caterpillar’s TH417, now offered in the regional market, boasts innovative and user-friendly features geared to enhance performance and versatility while lowering service time.

MOHAMED Abdulrahman Al Bahar, which represents Caterpillar in the region, is currently promoting the Cat TH417 telehandler, which has been fitted with a number of new systems and designs to enhance performance, promote operator efficiency and machine productivity, expand versatility and keep service time and costs to a minimum.

Al Bahar represents Caterpillar in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE and in Oman through its associate Oasis Trading and Equipment Company.

The telehandler, with a rated load capacity of 4,000 kg, delivers 17 m of lift height and is powered by a Cat C4.4 turbocharged, after-cooled, mechanically-controlled diesel engine producing 74.5 kW of power.

The TH417 is sized to work productively and cost effectively in a variety of construction, materials supply, and industrial applications.

The power train also features a limited slip differential fitted in the front axle.

'The system enables the telehandler to work in difficult underfoot conditions, and it engages automatically so that the operator can focus on getting work done,' says a spokesman for Caterpillar. 'The four-speed powersynchro transmission and torque converter drive system ensures long, trouble-free life in tough applications.'

The TH417’s cylinder and chain-driven boom result in reduced boom weights and improved cycle times, along with a compensating cylinder to keep the pallet forks or work tools parallel when lifting or lowering the boom. The telehandler also incorporates load-sensing hydraulics for higher lifting and digging forces and for the ability to operate all three boom functions simultaneously and proportionally.

The TH417 ... low maintenance.

'Its smoother, consistent control of the boom and work tool enables the operator to do more work, more efficiently and more accurately,' the spokesman says.

For the operator, the TH417 features a new, spacious cab providing all-around visibility due to the larger window area. Control placement and single electro-hydraulic joystick control of hydraulics ease the burden on the operator, while a transmission disconnect button on the joystick allows him to route engine power to the boom for faster boom operation.

A new dashboard features an interactive LCD that shows machine functions such as engine speed, machine speed, selected gear and direction of travel, and fuel level. A built-in start code device designed to reduce the risk of theft and unauthorised use comes standard.

Furthermore, the telehandler is capable of three different steering modes – two-wheel steer, circle steer and crab steer. This feature allows for improved control and manoeuvrability in tight spaces. When changing steering modes, the wheels automatically realign to the proper position.

The TH417 also comes with a wide range of Cat work tools such as forks, buckets, and lifting equipment for multiple tasks with different types of materials. In addition, a manual IT interface quick coupler fitted as standard allows the operator to change work tools quickly. An optional hydraulic quick coupler allows the operator to change work tools more easily and efficiently without leaving the cabin.

Reduced and simplified maintenance is another feature of the telehandler. Routine daily maintenance consists of simply checking the air cleaner indicator, hydraulic filter indicator, fluid levels and engine oil level in conjunction with a walk-around inspection. Service access points are conveniently located under the engine cover.

Al Bahar, founded in 1937, is one of the leading business houses in the Arabian Gulf. It has two major divisions – the Machinery Group (which represents Caterpillar) and the General Trading Group.
