SAUDI Arabia has earmarked SR10.78 billion ($2.87 billion) for road projects this year, in addition to initiating a study to design a public transportation system for each city of the kingdom and designing of 2,139 km of roads.
Transport Minister Jabara Al Seraisry said the ministry’s budget allocation will cover 284 projects that will see the construction of 4,154 km of highways and secondary roads in addition to an allocation of SR15 million ($4 million) for the study aimed at easing the traffic congestion in the cities.
While some of the projects are new, others entail completion of ongoing projects.
The new allocations include construction of 814 km of new roads and study and design of 759 km of roads in the Riyadh province. Some 432 km of new roads will be built in the Makkah province while designs will be generated for an additional 80 km of roads. Madinah will see the construction of 372 km of new roads with plans for a further 90 km of roads to be evaluated.
New roads to be built in the Eastern Province will stretch across 496 km while a study to be conducted for the construction of an additional 175 km of roads.
Extensive road networks will be built or are planned for other regions in the kingdom including:
• Qassim: 216 km of road to be built and a further 50 km under planning;
• Asir province: 428 km of new roads and another 202 km under study;
• Tabuk: 230 km of new roads;
• Hail: 213 km and 92 km planned;
• Northern Border Province: 194 km of new roads in addition to 66 km under design;
• Jazan: 217 km of roads to be built with 212 km under planning;
• Najran: 247 km of new roads with a further 67 km of roads planned;
• Baha: 140 km of new roads, and 162 km of roads under study; and
• Al Jouf province: 154 km of roads to be built with a further 184 km to be planned.
