WITH the ever-increasing popularity of using aluminium standing seam roofing systems in the GCC region, German fastener manufacturer EJOT is well placed to provide first-class fastening solutions to both system manufacturers and installers alike, says Dirk Homrighausen, managing director of EJOT Middle East.
“Building designers worldwide recognise the practical, sustainable and aesthetic qualities provided by leading aluminium standing seam cladding systems,” he says.
With their lightweight, flexible and sleek characteristics, these systems first appeared in the late 1970s and each decade has seen new challenges met by developers and new horizons attained by architects.
“Parallel to this, EJOT’s ability to create high quality fastening solutions has helped bring aspiration and achievement together – in short a true quality connection,” Homrighausen asserts.
At the heart of EJOT’s standing seam connection is the Super-Saphir fastener, engineered from grade 304 stainless steel.
“Its welded carbon drill bit is acknowledged for its strength and reliability, but the X2 adaptation of the fastener was engineered specifically to meet the design criteria set by aluminium standing seam halter systems,” he explains.

Homrighausen says the Super-Saphir was developed to meet the specific challenges created through the emergence of aluminium standing seam halter systems. “A significantly altered shank angle, combined with drill tip quality creates a masterpiece of German engineering that provides peace of mind. Specifiers and contractors know that installer error is virtually eliminated and the fastener is endorsed by a 25-year warranty,” he says.
EJOT is a medium-sized group of companies operating in the area of fastening technology. The company has 1,400 employees working in its companies in Germany, and a further 700 employees in overseas offices and associated companies in Europe, America and Asia. Its regional subsidiary EJOT Middle East is based in Sharjah, UAE.
EJOT products are high in quality, always corresponding to current technical standards, and the company responds quickly to market requirements to maintain this quality and to meet UK and European standards, before they are even issued, he says.
EJOT developed its unique Applitec centre, which is one of the most comprehensive fastener testing facilities in Europe. This is where the company undertakes testing for all aspects of fastener technology, from simple dimensional and three-dimensional analysis to testing the mechanical, structural and material dynamics of both the product and within its application. Today, the firm produces a full range of fixings designed to meet every possible project criterion ranging from halters to various substrates; liners and decks; and flashing, closures, drip angles and fixed points.
Some of the standing seam profile projects that made use of EJOT’s comprehensive fastener range include the Diamond Synchrotron Research Laboratory in Oxfordshire, England.
“This building has become almost iconic for its unusual ‘doughnut’ shape and technically complex curved roof. It is the largest scientific facility to be built in the UK for 40 years,” Homrighausen says.
EJOT supplied over 250,000 pieces of the specially adapted JT3-X2 stainless steel fasteners to fix Kalzip halter to lightweight purlins.
Other projects include the Aintree Racecourse Grandstand in Liverpool, England and Glasgow Fort in Scotland.
The distinctive grandstand development was the first project in the UK to feature the new Kalzip XT aluminium system. EJOT’s fasteners were used to fix the structural deck to the high yield hot-rolled sections – which entailed onsite technical support during construction.
The Glasgow Fort, a €180 million ($235 million) retail regeneration project, was developed with the local council authorities. The company met the demands of this time-sensitive, horseshoe-shaped project by supplying more than 300,000 task-specific fasteners and onsite support.
