Abu Dhabi to construct world-class heritage suq

01 May 2013

ABU DHABI will shortly invite bids from developers and operators to construct a world-class suq that will enhance the city’s cultural landscape.

The traditional suq is one of a number of community-led investments and developments launched by Abu Dhabi Municipality’s investment office division as part of its strategic plan to improve Abu Dhabi’s amenities and tourism offering for both the local community as well as regional and international visitors.

The municipality will also invite tenders for four district community centres in Bani Yas, Shawamekh, Samha and Nahda.

The proposed suq will be located at the historical gateway to Abu Dhabi Island opposite the Maqtaa Tower, between Sheikh Zayed and Al Maqtaa bridges. The project will also link to Khalifa Park and Sheikh Zayed Mosque, two of Abu Dhabi’s biggest attractions.

The 150,000-sq-m mixed-use destination comprises a modern waterfront experience featuring a traditional retail suq, food and beverage, entertainment and leisure outlets, combined with an open-air performance space for new hospitality offerings.

The municipality will work in partnership with the private sector to deliver these long-term capital-intensive projects.
