Iveco offers long-haul solutions

01 October 2016

Iveco, a brand of CNH Industrial, has introduced a host of new products and innovations at the 66th IAA Commercial Vehicles (IAA) event, showcasing its full range – from light vehicles to heavy trucks for on- and off-road applications, from buses to heavy-duty trucks for quarries and construction sites.

Iveco staged a world premiere of its new long-haul futuristic concept truck breaking new frontiers for totally sustainable transport. The IAA expo was held in Hanover, Germany, from September 22 to 29.

“Iveco’s Iveco Z concept truck breaks away from every constraint to be a zero-impact vehicle for a totally sustainable transport system,” says a company spokesman.

Designed by CNH Industrial Design Centre, it makes a statement on how the future could be for truck drivers. It is shaped by its enhanced aerodynamics, by the improved safety and by the aim of creating a new living cab space. It aims for zero accidents through the advanced use of automated driving technologies.

The Z Truck features a new-generation liquefied natural gas (LNG) engine running on bio-methane, which is derived from refined biogas, delivering long-haul transport with autonomy of 2,200 km and virtually zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The LNG-fuelled engine develops 460 hp and 2,000 Nm torque, and features a 16-gear automated transmission with Powershift in the upper gears. It uses up to 33 per cent less fuel. An on-board Rankine Cycle Waste Heat Recovery system exploits exhaust gas as a heat source to recover energy.

The Z Truck features Michelin X Line Energy, the first range to be awarded the AAA grading in rolling resistance, which saves long-haul convoys up to one litre of fuel per 100 km.

New Stralis

Centrestage on the Iveco stand was the New Stralis, which made its international debut last June in Madrid. The revolutionary three-vehicle range introduces a completely new driveline and, with the best reliability and efficiency, delivers leading edge total cost of operation (TCO) and CO2 reduction.

The New Stralis NP (Natural Power), which runs on compressed natural gas (CNG) and LNG, is claimed to be the most sustainable international transport truck ever and a real breakthrough in the gas truck industry. The New Stralis XP was developed for the demands of the international long-haul transport business, and is packed with innovative fuel-saving features and new services to maximise uptime and fuel efficiency.

“The most reliable and fuel-efficient truck on the market, designed to maximise reliability and reduce CO₂ and TCO, it delivers fuel savings of up to 11 per cent while the new generation services can add further savings of up to three per cent, resulting in an impressive 5.6 per cent reduction in TCO in long-haul missions,” says the spokesman.

Eurocargo

At the IAA, Iveco also introduced the new Euro VI C compliant Eurocargo ML160 (16 tonnes) in the new full air suspended version and display the eco-sustainable Natural Power version that runs on CNG. The Eurocargo range was crowned “International Truck of the Year 2016”.

The ML160 is the only vehicle in its class (6 to 19 tonnes) to adopt a single anti-emission system rather than relying on exhaust gas recirculation. Its new engine delivers 204 hp maximum power at 2,700 rpm with torque of 750 Nm from 1,400 to 1,800 rpm – 100 Nm more than its predecessor. The new Eurocargo NP has a range autonomy of up to 400 km, thus meeting the requirements of a variety of missions from multi-drop urban distribution to municipality missions.

Connectivity

Also at the IAA, Iveco showcased several new connectivity solutions and previewed three future developments that demonstrate the potential of the open platform concept of its Business Up: a functionality to display the rear camera view on the driver’s smartphone or tablet; an electronic hands-free key to open the vehicle with a smart watch; and a remote control of the tipper from a tablet.

Also, the New Daily Business Up app turns the driver’s smartphone or tablet into an interface with their New Daily Euro 6 light commercial vehicle, giving them ultimate efficiency in their mobile work station. The smart app provides real-time suggestions to reduce fuel consumption through the Driving Style Evaluation (DSE) system, and works out routes optimised for commercial vehicles with the Sygic Professional Navigation app.
