GE signs substation contract
GE Energy Connections said one of its units has won a contract from Indian construction group L&T to support seven 66/11-kV substations with advanced protection and automation systems at Lusail City mega-development in Qatar.
With this contract, the company is setting a new benchmark in localised provision of power solutions by supporting the power supply of Qatar’s future smart city, the Lusail City, which will also be the host venue of Qatar 2022 Fifa World Cup.
GE Energy Connections said its Grid Solutions business will be providing both the main relays marking the exclusive provision of all protection equipment for the substations.
In addition, more than 400 protection panels and the full DS Agile substation automation system for the seven substations are provided by Grid Solutions, it states.
These substations, protected and automated by GE, are located in Qetafian Island South, West 1, West 2, Wadi 1, Wadi 2, North and Marina. The panels are scheduled for supply by April next year and all the seven substations will be energised by the end of 2017. The substations at Lusail City will support the electricity needs of nearly 450,000 people who are expected to take up residence in the mega development.
The 80,000-seater Lusail stadium, which is set to host the opening and final matches of the Qatar 2022 Fifa World Cup, is also part of this master-planned development.
Serco wins Dubai Trolley contract extension
Serco, a British outsourcing company, said it has won a three-year contract extension from Dubai developer Emaar Properties for managing the operations and maintenance of the Downtown Dubai Trolley System until 2019.
The initial operation and maintenance contract was awarded to Serco in 2015, said the company, which specialises in the operation of public and private transport and traffic control, aviation, detention centres, call centres, prisons and schools.
The extension to 2019 reinforces the strength of Serco’s services portfolio delivering a fully integrated transport approach for the 500-acre Downtown Dubai mega-development. Serco’s participation in the project began in August 2014 when it was engaged by Emaar under an early operator involvement contract, giving advice on the system during the design phase.
David Greer, chief executive of Serco Middle East, says: “This award asserts our position as the region’s leading provider of high quality transport operations and maintenance services. The trolley is the first of its type in the Middle East and we are delighted to extend our partnership with Emaar and to continue to deliver the highest quality of service to the public.”
