SFS chosen for metro maintenance depots

01 June 2018

High-performance fasteners and rivets supplied by the UK division of SFS UK are being used in the construction of the Riyadh Metro.

The company has been commissioned to supply construction fasteners for three of the six maintenance depots serving the metro lines.  The maintenance buildings are crucial to the smooth operation of the network’s state-of-the-art Siemens and Bombardier rolling stock.

Pete Hamby, SFS regional manager – Middle East, said: “The Riyadh Metro has been an exciting project to be involved in as it is so important to the city’s sustainable growth ambitions. Our team has worked extremely well to rise to the challenges of this demanding project – both in terms of the technical elements with on-site pull out tests required by the client, and on the supply chain element in meeting the delivery schedule of a tight programme.”

The building envelope contract for maintenance sheds for Lines One (North-South Blue Line) and Two (East-West Red Line) were secured by Arabian Profiles in Sharjah. It installed its aluminium Aluform standing seam with SFS’s SX3 A4 halter fasteners, and SXC sandwich panel fasteners for the Zamil panels on the walls.

Meanwhile, Dark Globe from Saudi Arabia secured the contract for the depot on  Line Three (East-West Orange Line), with the main contractor, having chosen to purchase the fasteners directly.

Here more than 550,000 of SFS AP14 painted rivets were specified by the architects for fixing the internal decking and 100,000 TDB-S fasteners were used to fix the decking into the 25-mm-thick steel. Kalzip fasteners were supplied on both lines.

Being developed by Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA), the $22.5-billion Riyadh Metro will consist of six metro lines, complete with 85 new stations and maintenance sheds for each line spanning a total of 176 km.
