Larsen & Toubro (L&T), India’s leading engineering and construction conglomerate, has been awarded a large contract by Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the UAE’s integrated railway network, for the design and build of freight handling facilities at seven strategic locations across the emirates.
This design-and-build contract for freight facilities package has been bagged by L&T’s Metallurgical and Material Handling Strategic Business, against stiff international competition, states the Indian group.
This is a major breakthrough project for L&T in the Stage-2 expansion phase of Etihad Rail and will be executed in a joint venture with Power China, under a contract worth $509 million.
The scope of work involves design, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of bulk material handling systems (rail loading and unloading systems) with associated civil and structural works, bulk material storage facilities, general cargo and container handling facilities with freight terminal management and control systems, says L&T.
All the freight stations will include railway siding and track works apart from other infrastructure works such as bridges, buildings, roads and drains, water and electricity utility systems, it adds.
Meanwhile, L&T says its Power Transmission and Distribution Business unit has won a key contract to build a 380-kV substation in Saudi Arabia along with an associated 230-kV cable network and establish two transmission line corridors.
Also, L&T has clinched a new order from a major client in the Middle East region for the construction of EHV (extra high voltage) overhead lines.
In addition to the Middle East contracts, the Indian engineering conglomerate has also secured major orders from prestigious clients in the Philippines as well as contracts in its domestic market.
