Miraah on track despite setback

Oman’s energy major Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has announced that work will continue on its ambitious Miraah solar farm project despite its key technology partner, US-based GlassPoint Solar, going into liquidation.

Oman owns 31 per cent of shares in the California-headquartered GlassPoint Solar, while Royal Dutch Shell is a major stake holder.

PDO’s giant 1,021 MW solar farm is currently in an advanced stage of implementation at the Amal field in the south of the sultanate, reported Oman Daily Observer. Construction on the project began in October 2015 with part of the vast scheme already in operation. At full capacity, it will feature a total of 36 glasshouse modules.

Billed as a pioneer in the use of solar energy for steam generation in heavy oil production, GlassPoint Solar, was facing liquidation following the Covid-19 crisis, the report added.

Tenders out for science centre

Oman has floated a tender for the construction of a science and innovation centre in the Ibri region of the sultanate, said a report.

The 1,565-sq-m project, adjoining Ibri Hospital, is one of several sustainable social development projects being implemented by the private sector in various governorates of the sultanate, reported Oman Observer.

Funded by the sultanate’s integrated energy company OQ, it will comprise a multi-purpose hall, a library, a theatre, an astronomical observatory dome, a celebration hall and a science and innovation centre, it stated.

EoIs for food producing units

Bahrain’s Ministry of Works, Municipality Affairs and Urban Planning has invited expressions of interest (EoIs) from leading construction firms and developers for the establishment of food sustainability facilities in various locations across the kingdom.

The project is being implemented by the Special Projects Office of the ministry as part of the Food Sustainability Initiative which will see development of two hydrophonic greenhouses, each coming up on a 11,000-sq-m area.

As per the ministry’s notification, the winning bidder will be developing both the proposed sites for the greenhouse projects and also set up the additional necessary facilities in the area.

These projects are being implemented on a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) model. The last date for submitting the EoIs was May 27.
