More than 46 per cent of the work has been completed on the BD20 million ($53 million) flyover linking the intersection of Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Highway and Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Highway and it is on track for launch by the year-end, reported the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.
Known as the Saar Intersection, it is a major crossing point for traffic coming via the King Fahad Causeway and Manama.
The project was awarded to a joint venture between Al Ghanim International and Al Fahad.
The Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry said the project, which includes a uni-directional left turn flyover, serving the same traffic movement, and the expansion of the Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Highway, will tackle traffic congestion witnessed on both highways at rush hours and increase their capacity.
Work on the project has been implemented in three stages, as one segment receives reinforcement, the second receives concrete for the bottom slab and the web, while the third receives concrete for the top slab.
The contractor has implemented a technique called ‘incremental launching’ to build the bridge deck in order to save time and money, while meeting quality requirements of the project, said the report citing the ministry.
The substructure works are 95 per cent completed on the project and pier works are 85 per cent done. Also the superstructure is 28 per cent completed along with an overall progress of the project – including road and utility works – standing at 43.25 per cent.
Meanwhile, the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry is also supervising work on a multi-million-dinar headquarters of the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry, work on which is 29 per cent complete.
Minister Kamal Ahmed stressed the importance of adhering to the 24-month approved time-table with the project expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2021.
“The concrete structure of the main building was recently completed, and work is under way to implement civil works and electromechanical installations on the various floors in the building in addition to work connected to the building’s electrical sub-station,” said Ahmed.
The BD7.7 million contract is being carried out by Al Jameel Construction with Gulf Engineering House supervising the project.
The seven-storey building is being developed on a 15,611-sq-m plot of land with overall construction covering 19,275 sq m. It also includes a basement housing electromechanical services. The building also consists of 219 parking spaces and green spaces while also being equipped with the latest technology and equipment which implement international standards while also using eco-friendly materials in line with modern construction requirements.
