Webuild’s World Cup stadium opens

01 January 2022

Al Bayt Stadium in Doha, Qatar, which has been newly completed by a consortium led by Italy’s Webuild, was the venue for the inaugural game of the 2021 Fifa Arab Cup held on November 20.

Webuild (previously Salini Impregilo), a leading global player in the construction of large and complex projects, was part of a consortium that oversaw the design and construction of the isports complex which will host the Fifa World Cup matches in 2022.

Spread over a 200,000-sq-m area, the Al Bayt Stadium is surrounded by parks and other green areas. The project has used advanced materials with a low impact on the environment. Some 20 per cent of the materials used come from renewable sources. The retractable transparent roof reduces energy consumption and allows sunlight in to promote the growth of grass on the pitch.

With a maximum capacity of 60,000 spectators, the structure distinguishes itself as a model of sustainability and respect for the cultural heritage of the country.

The stadium, commissioned by the Aspire Zone Foundation, has a unique shape, inspired by bayt al sha’ar, the traditional tent of the Qatari and a symbol of hospitality in Arab culture, says Webuild.
