Aecom, a leading infrastructure consulting firm, has been selected to provide programme management services for Cargo Terminal 2 and Amiri Flight Facilities as part of the Hamad International Airport Expansion Program for the Qatar Company for Airports Operation and Management.

The contract is for a six-year period, with the cargo bridging facility prioritised for operational readiness ahead of the start of the Fifa World Cup Qatar in November 2022.

Under this agreement, Aecom will be providing project management and construction management of the new cargo terminal and ancillary supporting buildings that include a veterinary inspection centre, central utility plant and infrastructure diversions. Further, a cargo bridging facility will be created to accommodate predicted overflow from Cargo Terminal 1.

On the contract win, Aecom’s President Lara Poloni said: “We are excited to support the execution of Qatar Company for Airports Operation and Management’s infrastructure expansion plans by developing these important facilities at Hamad International Airport. We have a longstanding history in the country and are looking forward to leveraging our significant local knowledge and extensive aviation experience to successfully manage this programme.”

Aecom’s CEO (Middle East & Africa) Hamed Zaghw said: “We are fully committed to helping achieve the goals of the Hamad International Airport Expansion Project, which will prepare it for future growth and triple the airport’s overall cargo capacity. The project will enhance the delivery and processing of supplies and important cargo to Qatar, helping to meet the demands of its growing economy while significantly enhancing its global freight operations.”

Meanwhile, Aecom has also announced that it has secured a four-year secondment contract from Qatar’s public works authority Ashghal to manage its roads and drainage programme.

More than 200 Aecom professionals will work within Ashghal’s Roads Projects Department, providing management and oversight of its Local Roads and Drainage Programme.

Aecom said its secondees will support the further modernisation and expansion of Qatar’s surface transport network, improving its accessibility, safety and sustainability for all users.

On the contract win, Poloni said: “In Qatar, a high priority is being placed on infrastructure projects that enhance residential neighbourhoods and improve livability. Our work with Ashghal reflects our in-depth understanding of the challenges facing Qatar as it strives to meet the needs of current and future generations.”
