Oman-Etihad Rail calls for bids; Saudi link eyed

01 April 2023

Oman-Etihad Rail Company, the developer and operator of the railway network connecting the sultanate and the UAE, last month invited prequalification bids from companies specialised in executing mega infrastructure projects to carry out civil works of the network.

The company is laying the groundwork and work plan for the project, including its financial mechanism and schedule. The 303-km Oman-UAE railway network will extend from Sohar Port to the UAE National Rail Network, linking Oman with Abu Dhabi.

As per the tender document, prospective contractors need to demonstrate individually or as a joint venture/consortium that they have the necessary resources and expertise to meet the requirements of the project

The bidders must be local firms or a JV/consortium led by a local company registered in Oman or the UAE to deliver assigned tasks in the relevant country, it stated.

They should also have recent experience in executing projects of a similar size and nature, including earthworks, structures, tunnels, freight facilities, roads and depots, it added.

As per the notification, these firms must be experienced in designing and building for on-time completion of projects to required quality. The bidding for the project ended last month.

Meanwhile, Oman and Saudi Arabia are studying the prospect of building a railway line linking the cities of Duqm and Riyadh through Ibri border crossing, reported Muscat Daily citing the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology.

The establishment of such a line will be useful for transporting goods and stimulating commercial movement, not passenger transport, said the report.
