Kuwait’s Umm Al Hayman plant wins accolades

Germany-based WTE Wassertechnik’s Umm Al Hayman wastewater treatment project in Kuwait recently secured second place in the Wastewater Project of the Year category at the Global Water Summit 2024 in London. The award recognises the project’s outstanding achievement in addressing Kuwait’s water challenges.

The Umm Al Hayman project, one of the world’s largest wastewater treatment facilities, commenced operations in January 2024, with an initial output capacity  of 500,000 cu m per day, which can  be further expanded by 200,000 cu m per day. The plant employs advanced technologies, including cloth filtration, UV disinfection, and chlorination, to produce high-quality treated water for agricultural and industrial use.

WTE Wassertechnik secured the contract for the mega-project in 2020, with a total value of approximately €1.6 billion ($1.7 billion). As general contractor, WTE was responsible in particular for the planning and construction of the plant and – together with partners – the pipeline infrastructure with pumping stations. The company will operate the treatment plant for 25 years and the sewer network for three years.
