Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi: Telling the story of the land

01 August 2025

The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi is on schedule to welcome visitors by the end of 2025. This museum and research institute will tell the expansive story of our land and its people, alongside the broader history of the universe.

Its design, a three-dimensional pentagonal-shaped cluster of buildings, reflects the natural sabkha salt flat terraforms of the UAE, mediated by green open areas reminiscent of wadi channels.

Sustainability is a cornerstone of its design, with passive measures leading to a significant 49.4 per cent reduction in external heat gains through a highly efficient building envelope. This is crucial for exhibits sensitive to temperature and humidity. The project also prioritises sustainable sourcing, with 70 per cent of all timber certified and 95 per cent of paints and finishes being low emissivity or of low VOC content.
