In a latest contract, HLG will construct the region’s first smart hospital for Fakeeh Academic Medical Centre for $127 million

Habtoor Leighton Group (HLG) has been awarded a prestigious contract worth $127 million to construct the first phase of the Fakeeh Academic Medical Centre (FAMC) in Dubai, UAE.

This is in addition to several other key orders won by the group over the last few months.

The hospital is to be built at the integrated free zone park at Dubai Silicon Oasis and will be the first smart hospital in the UAE and the region. A state-of-the-art medical university is planned in the second phase. Work on the project is said to start soon with completion expected in October 2017.

HLG CEO and managing director José Lopez-Monis comments: “The group is proud that Fakeeh Academic Medical Centre has selected HLG to produce leading-edge research and treatment facilities for the construction of the modern centre.”

This medical facility will have five centres of excellence specialising in diabetes and endocrinology, muscles, bones and joints, emergency medicine, pulmonary medicine and cardiology. It will offer robotic surgery and feature an automated medication dispensing system.

The scope of HLG’s work includes the construction of a 150-bed hospital and installation of medical equipment and loose furniture. It also includes structural works, architectural and civil works, mechanical, plumbing and electrical works and final testing, commissioning and cleaning. All construction works will be aimed at the building achieving Leed Silver Certificate.

Meanwhile, HLG’s Abu Dhabi office, Leighton Contracting Abu Dhabi, has been awarded a Dh263-million ($71.6 million) contract for the construction of Khalifa Industrial Zone (Kizad) Area A Secondary Infrastructure (Phase 1B) in Abu Dhabi.

The scope of works within a 52-sq-km site includes building a road network (dual and single) and associated traffic signals, streetlights and signage; sewerage network and associated pumping stations; storm network and associated pumping stations; potable water network and associated fire hydrants; process water network; telecom network (containment only); and LV and MV network and associated 11 kV substations. The methodology will include extensive dewatering, excavation, pipe-laying and road construction works.

“HLG is already involved in the construction of different phases of Khalifa Port and Kizad in Abu Dhabi and we are very proud to again be selected by Abu Dhabi Ports to deliver this project,” says Lopez-Monis.

“This award is a great achievement that proves the group remains a preferred contractor for clients to whom HLG has demonstrated its ability to deliver complex and high quality projects. I congratulate all teams involved in securing this project with a key client such as Abu Dhabi Ports.”

Work on the project started in July this year and is scheduled for completion in March 2017.

In another contract, HLG will be carrying out construction and road improvement works at Azizya East for Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashghal) through its local office Leighton Contracting Qatar.

Part of the local roads and drainage programme (LRDP), the $60-million project includes infrastructure, roads, drainage and utilities for approximately 740 residential plots spanning 72 hectares with an internal highway network of roads in varying corridor widths ranging from 16 to 32 m. The proposed road network will contain traffic signal controlled junctions, along with a number of simple priority junctions. The total length of road network will be approximately 13.5 km. The project is scheduled for completion in November 2016.

Meanwhile in Oman, HLG’s local office Leighton Middle East Contracting is developing Saraya Bandar Jissah, Boutique Hotel for a contract value of Dh350 million ($95.3 million).

The Boutique Hotel is a five-star, 112-key, luxury hotel, which spans 60,000 sq m encompassing the main hotel building and seven clusters of one and two-bedroom villas. HLG will construct this luxury hotel complex which also features an executive lounge, gym, business centre, reception, lobby lounge, dining options, a prayer room, retail, commercial offices and service facilities.
