Sharjah Cement boosts capacity

Sharjah Cement and Industrial Development Company (SCIDC) is expanding clinker production capacity at its Sharjah Cement Factory.

01 MARCH 2001

Expansion work is under way at Sharjah Cement Factory, which will boost its clinker production capacity to 1.3 million tonnes per year. The contract was awarded to IHI to install a 3,400 tonnes per day precalciner kiln, raw mill and crushing plant. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2002.

The cement factory was set up by Sharjah Cement and Industrial Development Company (SCIDC) which was established to promote industries in Sharjah.

The factory is situated 25 km east of Sharjah city on the Sharjah-Dhaid road, 10 km from Sharjah International Airport. The plant with a rated clinker capacity of 220,000 tonnes per year (tpy) was commissioned in 1977.

In 1983, with the installation of a new cement mill and packing plant by UBE Industries, Japan, the grinding capacity of the factory was increased to 1 million tpy.

The factory has five silos, having total storage capacity of over 28,000 tonnes of cement. According to a company spokesman, the factory manufactures the following types of cement as well as ground granulated blastfurnace slag:

  • Portland cement conforming to BS 12-1996, Class 42.5 N as well as ASTM C 150-1999, Type 1;

  • Sulphate-resisting Portland cement conforming to BS 4027-1996, Class 42.5 N-LA as well as ASTM C 150-1999, Type V;

  • Moderate sulphate-resisting Portland cement conforming to BS 12-1996, low alkali, Class 42.5 N, having a slag content of 55 per cent;

  • High slag blastfurnace cement conforming to BS 4246-1996, having a slag content of 70 per cent; and

  • Ground granulated blastfurnace slag conforming to BS 6699-192.

    ''A strict quality control management system is in operation at all stages of manufacture to ensure that products comply with the relevant ASTM or BS specifications and the performance of cement, which is significantly above standard requirements, remains consistent and uniform,'' he says. ''The testing and inspection are carried out at: the raw material input stage; in-process intermediate stages, that is, raw meal and clinker production; and at the final stage of manufacture and despatch.

    On August 7, 1996 the company was registered with BSI as an accredited registered holder of ISO 9002 and all its products have been Kitemarked by BSI, UK.

    The factory's cement sales aggregate to an average of about 800,000 tonnes over the past few years.
