A total of 15 twin Alimak construction hoists are busy at work on a major multi-purpose development going up in the Egyptian capital Cairo.
"The Golden Pyramids Plaza on the outskirts of Egypt's capital is the latest multi-purpose development in the city;" says Birgit Eriksson of Alimak. "And the main contractor Orascom CCC joint venture is using 15 twin Alimak construction hoists, making it one of the largest-ever single orders for the company in Egypt."
Situated in the new suburb of Nasr City, the Golden Pyramids covers an area measuring 400 m by 350 m. Saudi-financed, the project consists of 15 tower blocks of varying heights as well as 11 low-level buildings of three and four storeys.
The 15 twin-cage configured Alimak hoists are being used to transport workers and material to the upper reaches of the 15 towers.
Working at a speed of 40 m per minute, the units are operating on average 10 hours a day and carrying loads of up to 2 tonnes. Materials being transported include mortar, concrete blocks and sand.
"The project is one of the largest multi-purpose developments in Cairo," says Eriksson. "Ten of the high-rise towers will be apartments, while the other five will be taken over by an international hotel."
Eriksson continues: "The high-rise towers will form a ring around the site, while the centre will be covered by a podium containing a shopping arcade, which in turn will be topped by a 48-m-high concrete pyramid with a glass tip.
"Below the main podium there are three underground levels for car parking and a mufti-screen cinema complex.
"The tallest towers will be the hotel buildings, with the tallest topping out at 212 m. The other four hotel towers will be 209 m, two of 77 m and a 128 m-high tower. Meanwhile the apartment towers vary in height from the tallest at 198 m to a 141-m-high tower.
"All concrete for the project is being poured in-situ, and it is estimated that around 400,000 cu m will eventually be used."
The scheduled completion date for the project is 2002.
All of the twin hoists were supplied by the Swedish manufacturer's local representative IDP (International Development Programmes).
