DESALINATION plants process seawater in deaerators and flash evaporator units to produce fresh water. The environment within the seawater intake lines, deaerator vessels and flash evaporator units, is extremely corrosive to carbon steel so protection is critical.

Ceilcote linings from KCH Keramchemie (UK) are being extensively used in the Middle East to protect desalination equipment against corrosion, says a company spokesman. An installation completed by Ceilcote's approved applicator, Anticorrosion Protection Systems, in Dubai in the UAE involved lining the interior of all seawater intake lines and deaerator vessels with a glass flake polyester coating and lining the evaporator channel head boxes with ebonite rubber.

After five years of continual operation since the installation was commissioned, a recent inspection indicated that all installed linings were in good condition and required no remedial work, he claims.
