Conmix Limited, one of the leading readymixed concrete suppliers and the largest manufacturer of pre-mixed plasters and mortars in the UAE, was established in 1975 as a joint venture company by Bukhatir Investments, German Gulf Enterprises of the UAE and Karl Epple GmbH of Germany.
The company has introduced two new products to provide effective thermal insulation for buildings in the region.
"Climatic conditions in the Arabian Gulf are very harsh. In summer, outside temperatures in the region are regularly in the high forties, hence the heavy reliance on air-conditioners to maintain comfortable living conditions," says Lothar Hellenkamp, the general manager of the Sharjah-based company.
Numerous buildings have poor insulation systems, which result in very high power consumption to cool the interiors of buildings to comfortable levels, he points out.
The costs involved are very high and, in addition, this high power consumption causes a severe strain on the region's natural energy resources. It is, therefore, essential that suitable thermal insulation systems are incorporated when constructing a building.
Thermal insulation provides a number of benefits, he says. It:
In addition, thermally-insulated buildings suffer less noise pollution from the air-conditioners and chiller rooms as well as noise from the outside.
Conmix's new products - an insulation plaster called IPC and a thermal insulation system - are designed to provide thermal insulation of walls of buildings.
IPC is a dry, pre-mixed, cement-based plaster for internal and/or external application to walls. It greatly reduces the consumption of electricity for cooling, thus providing enormous energy savings, says Hellenkamp. IPC is also an ideal substrate to receive subsequent finishes such as decorative plasters or paints, he adds.
The Conmix thermal insulation system is a tried and tested system, he says. Apart from its use in new construction, the thermal insulation system can be used to aesthetically refurbish existing buildings having poor thermal insulation in a simple and cost-effective manner. In properly designed and constructed buildings using the system, the energy saving can be as high as 80 per cent, Hellenkamp claims.
Conmix readymixed concrete and pre-mixed plasters and mortars form an integral part of innumerable building and civil engineering works throughout the Middle East and elsewhere. Some of the prestigious projects completed with Conmix material include international airports, highway interchanges, palaces, hotels, schools, universities, housing complexes, villas, shopping malls, office blocks, banks and hospitals.
"Construction companies increasingly rely on Conmix products because of the exemplary quality of its products and renowned reliability of its service.
"German managed, Conmix has a team of more than 200 skilled and trained multinational employees with highly experienced engineers and laboratory personnel. The company's technical advisors are always available to assess projects and recommend suitable products and cost-effective systems.
"ISO 9001-certified Conmix follows stringent quality regulations and its products meet all the relevant BS, ASTM and DIN standards. Conmix has a fully equipped laboratory and a research and development (R&D) wing with state-of-the-art facilities, which help the company in maintaining the requisite standards.
"Conmix believes in constantly upgrading and improving existing product lines and introducing new and innovative products in keeping with the times.
The new thermal insulation products have been introduced in line with this policy," says Hellenkamp.
Conmix manufactures a wide range of gypsum and cement-based, pre-mixed spray plasters for internal and external application. Mineral based, they are environment-friendly offering ease and speed of application, ensuring greater efficiency and cost-saving with quality finishing, he says.
According to Hellenkamp, the following are the advantages of pre-mixed spray plasters:
