Job-specific tools an Otal speciality

01 April 2003

The three key ingredients necessary for a successful job complement each other: the correct tools, the right product and a skilled applicator. If a job fails, the product is often blamed, although most failures occur due to the use of the wrong tools for the specific application, according to a Dubai-based company.

Since its establishment in 1996, Otal has become well known in the Gulf region for its superior tool products, commitment to quality, service and product performance, says Naram H Nassar, the company's managing partner.

Otal specialises in job-specific tools and equipment, including ESCA 2000 mobile scaffolding, Fix Ring clamps, Petro Clear fuel filters and PPW-Polyplan concrete repair and coating tools.

"PPW-Polyplan-Werkzeuge of Germany manufactures tools for concrete injection and repairs, and coating tools," says Nassar. "It is internationally-renowned for its activities in concrete crack grouting and as a supplier of tools and equipment for the processing of liquid synthetic materials," he adds.

Otal is the sole representative for PPW-Polyplan products in the Gulf region, which include a comprehensive range of injection equipment for grouting and sealing concrete and masonry cracks.

This equipment includes high-pressure packers for concrete or synthetic resin injections, all of which are fitted with cone-head nipples suitable for both low and high-pressure operations. Packers for the injection of cement emulsion and other viscous media are also offered, along with packers with flat head nipple, composite packers, injection pumps, and equipment for crack measuring and monitoring, says Nassar.

PPW-Polyplan also provides tools for the processing of liquid synthetic materials such as polyester, glass-fibre, epoxy resin, polyurethane resin and acrylic resin, with and without reinforcement for shaped parts and for coating applications.

Tools and equipment supplied by the company are used for coating floors for sports facilities and workshop halls, which have to withstand wear caused by heavy vehicle traffic, or which must be electrically conductive and resistant to abrasion.

The Polyplan spiked roller is, according to Otal, useful for thick coatings, preventing unevenness when coating with solvent-containing liquid plastics and helping remove trapped air bubbles after coating. Spike shoes are available for walking over fresh coatings.

In addition to PPW-Polyplan products, Otal recently launched the Fix-Ring clamp from France, a high quality, economical, fast and effective way to fix ducts and pipes, according to Nassar.

"These clamps are flame-retardant, self-extinguishing and ozone-stabilised, and come in innovative forms of 'the quadruple' and the 'open clamp', along with the single and double," he explains.

The quadruple is able to hold four pipes or ducts in perfect order with just one 8mm diameter drilling without rawl plugs or screws. Fix Ring Clamps reduce work while increasing efficiency and the aesthetic appeal of the application.

Meanwhile, a product, which has had major success in the UAE for Otal, is an oil-water separator from Austrian firm Freylit.

"Freylit reduces the oil particles down to five parts per million (5 ppm), whereas the local specification allows up to 50 ppm in sewage," says Nassar.

"Garages, car washes, oil facilities, tank farms, fuel suppliers, offshore production rigs and refineries, can save heavily on the disposal cost of contaminated water since they can reuse it or dispose of their wastewater directly to the sewage or back to nature once it has passed through the separator and its oil content is less than 5 ppm."

More than 5,000 units ranging from the basic 180 litres per minute unit up to industrial installations of 10,000 cu m per hour have proven the efficiency of the Freylit separators worldwide, he says. There are more than 25 Freylit systems currently in use in the UAE.
