Dammam-based Sipco Paints offers a range of epoxy coatings designed to withstand the highly corrosive environments encountered in the Middle East.
01 June 2003
SIPCO Paints manufactures a wide range of epoxy coatings which are fast becoming the industry standard, particularly for surface-tolerant applications, says a spokesman for the Dammam-based paints and coatings manufacturer.
These leading products have been designed to offer solutions to the toughest corrosion problems, and their proven track record is an indication of their successful performance throughout the Middle East, he says.
The Siptank and Sipoxy-Shield family of surface-tolerant products are not just polyamide epoxies with free oil to aid rust wetting. They utilise epoxy curative technology that is new, innovative and most importantly, extremely effective, the spokesman points out.
Elaborating on the systems, he says: "Siptank and Sipoxy-Shield coatings offer increased performance and can cut costs substantially. Their unique reaction mechanism provides a more complete and uniform cure. This progressive reaction is enhanced by the increased molecular mobility, and when coupled with the hydrophobic nature of the resin system, makes low temperature cure potential, water resistance, and chemical resistance a reality with less surface preparation.
"Siptank and Sipoxy Shield coatings are extremely effective over tight rust and tolerant to traces of moisture and oil contamination, lowering surface preparation costs. The minimum standard for non-immersion service is SSPC-SP-2 or St2; for immersion service, the minimum standard is SSPC-SP-3 or St3. These savings are in addition to those possible from faster cure, recoat, and handling.
"The five coatings within these ranges (Siptank 256, Sipoxy HB Mastic 230, Sipoxy-Shield 240, Sipoxy-Shield 275 and Sipoxy-Shield 285) use no lead or chromates and are free of coal tar reinforcing resins which are considered carcinogens."
Siptank 256
Siptank 256 conforms to BS 6920 and is described as being ideal for lining potable water storage tanks. It offers the unique advantages of the Siptank coating line - surface tolerance, fast recoat, low temperature cure, and proven performance.
"It is both extremely user-friendly, and solvent-free, making it an environmentally responsible choice," says the spokesman. "Besides potable water storage tanks, this highly versatile coating can be used in a variety of applications, including pulp and paper mills, chemical and fertiliser plants, sewage treatment plants, tanks farms and piping."
Sipoxy HB Mastic 230
The high-build Sipoxy HB Mastic 230, which is part of the Sipoxy Shield family, is a high-performance, multi-purpose, chemically-cured epoxy primer and/or finish, for industrial application with extended recoat times in various weather environments. It is suitable for use on properly prepared steel or masonry surfaces and can also be used on concrete floors or as a filler for open texture concrete blocks. Sipco HB Mastic 230 has excellent adhesion to difficult surfaces such as galvanised steel, aluminium and fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP).
It is suited for use on structural steel, piping, tanks, and equipment in chemical, fertiliser, power plants, petroleum refineries, pulp and paper mills, water and sewage treatment plants.
Sipoxy-Shield 240
Sipoxy-Shield 240 is a polyamide high-build pigmented epoxy coating with low VOC (volatile organic compounds). ''It is chemically cured, self-priming, and tolerant to minimal surface preparation, making it the first choice for industrial use where grit blasting is prohibited or not cost-effective,'' the spokesman continues. ''It can be applied over blasted or primed steel or properly prepared old coatings.
"This single coating provides excellent corrosion protection for bridges, steel structures, tank farms, and piping systems.
Sipoxy-Shield 275
"Sipoxy-Shield 275 is the backbone of Sipco's protective high-performance coating systems. As a single multi-purpose surface-tolerant coating or as the first coat in a multi-coat system, this product sets the performance standard which others strive to achieve. Numerous independent tests have proven the superiority of Sipoxy-Shield 275. It adheres to tight rust and damp surfaces and is suitable for salt and fresh water immersion; it is ideal for lining tanks, pipes, and for use in water and sewage treatment tanks, refineries, and aggressive industrial environments.
"The product's ability to cure under water makes it ideal for use on offshore platforms and tidal areas. Sipoxy-Shield cures down to -10 deg C and dries to recoat in four hours at 25 deg C. Tough, foolproof, universal, and user-friendly, the product is equally effective for maintenance or new construction, steel or masonry.
"The low VOC, multi-purpose Sipoxy-Shield 285 lowers the cost of surface preparation while providing superior corrosion protection and chemical resistance. It was developed to enhance the solvent resistance of Sipoxy-Shield 275. Its properties make it especially effective as a lining for fuel storage tanks, by itself or top coated with Sipoxy-Guard 270 chemical resistant lining.
Sipoxy-Shield 285
"In industrial environments, Sipoxy-Shield 285 performs exceptionally well as a tank lining or exterior finish, or as the first coat in a two-coat system with Sipthane Urethane enamel finish. It can be used in a variety of applications, including pulp and paper mills, chemical and fertiliser plants, sewage treatment plants, tank farms, piping, and bridges.
"Sipoxy-Shield 285 is environmentally sensitive with a VOC of only 1.41 lbs/gallon (170 gm/l). Like Sipoxy-Shield 275, this advanced technology epoxy coating dries to recoat in four hours at 25 deg C."
