'D' top-of-lineVolvo launches a high-end loader that boasts new looks, improved hydraulics, lower noise and a new monitoring system.

Volvo Construction Equipment (VCE) of Sweden has launched its new top-of-the-range D-Series wheel loader, the L330D, that is said to offer power and technology with environmental concren.

Detailing its features, a spokesman says: ''The new 52-tonne L330D incorporates a number of improvements aimed at enhancing performance, operator comfort and productivity, while reducing operating costs, downtime and noise levels.

''The most obvious visible difference is in the design of the new rear end. Rounded hood corners and smoother contours on the counterweight provide a modern appearance and improved visibility, while flat grey paint on the top of the hood eliminates distracting glare from the sun.

"Volvo is renowned for operator comfort and safety and the new L330D enhances this reputation. The new ROPS/FOPS certified Volvo Care Cab II features a new interior with enhanced ergonomics, allowing operators to work comfortably throughout each shift. A larger rear window provides better visibility, while access to the cab is much easier thanks to the improved ladder and platform.

''Once positioned in the multi-adjustable seat, the operator can see at a glance the centrally located instrumentation on the wraparound dashboard.

''The new hydraulic system utilises three variable displacement piston pumps to provide easier service, higher availability and lower operating costs. Hydraulic cooling is electronically controlled, and the hydraulic cooler area is doubled for more efficient cooling and longer component life.

''An optional boom suspension system (BSS), including gas/oil accumulators connected to the lift cylinders, reduces shock loads. The system improves operator comfort and travel speed when operating on rough ground with load.

''A heavier standard counterweight provides increased stability and makes the L330D more comfortable to operate. An optional block handling counterweight is available.

''The L330D is powered by a high-performance, low-emission 16-litre Volvo engine with a unique twin pump intercooling system. The engine generates maximum torque at as low as 1,000 rpm, providing quick response and meeting all existing emission requirements. With 500-hour service intervals for engine oil and filter changes, the engine also maximises loader availability.

''A hydraulically driven cooling fan reduces non-productive demands on the engine, it saves fuel and makes more power available to the wheels.

''Separate compartments for the engine and radiator, as well the hydraulically-driven fan, help to keep external sound levels below EU 2006 legal demands.

''Other engine improvements include a high-capacity breather filter on the fuel tank and a check valve on the tank's ventilation line to minimise fuel spillage. An oil trap is fitted as standard equipment to the crankcase ventilation line. Backing up the powerful engine is a heavy-duty countershaft transmission which offers four speeds in both forward and reverse ranges.

''The Volvo automatic power shift (APS II), automatic shifting system monitors both engine speed and ground speed to provide precise control of shifting at all times. The operator can select one of four different shifting programmes using a dashboard-mounted mode selector.

''The new Contronic II electrical and monitoring system monitors all vital machine systems and functions, including APSII, CDC and BSS, and instantly alerts the operator if a potential problem or fault occurs.

''Mounted in the centre console of the dashboard and incorporating an integrated speedometer, Contronic II displays operating information and warnings in plain text. Direct access to all major monitoring screens is provided by a new control keypad, making the system even easier to use than its predecessor.

''Contronic II also acts as a diagnostic tool for service technicians, who can access operating information and fault codes stored in the loader's main computer via the service display, or by using Matris, Volvo's new PC-based data tracking system.

VCE, which is part of the Volvo Group, develops, manufactures and markets Volvo, Pel-Job and Champion construction equipment.

In the Gulf, Volvo machines are marketed by Al Zabin International Group Company for Heavy Equipment in Kuwait, General Engineering Services Company (Genserv) in Oman, Al Rehab Equipment Machinery Company in Saudi Arabia, and Al Futtaim Auto and Machinery Company in the UAE.
