Muharraq will soon be given a BD400,000 ($1,067,000) face-lift with a landmark gate, two promenades and a public beach, said the Muharraq Governor Salman bin Isa bin Hindi.
The leading project - the Bab Al Muharraq (Muharraq gate) -designed by Bahraini artist, Jassim Al Meer, is the brainchild of the people of Muharraq and the governorate.
The BD150,000-gate's design features three levels, each reflecting a unique side of Muharraq's heritage and traditional architectural designs. The governorate has proposed two locations for the project: Bahrain International Airport roundabout and the traffic lights near the Shaikh Isa causeway at the entrance to Muharraq.
Other projects include two promenades - one near Arad Fort at a cost of BD20,000 and the other larger one around Arad Fort lake near Bahrain International Airport at a cost of BD200,000.
The 300-m long and 9-m wide Arad promenade will have two lanes and an area of 3,495 sq m. The Arad Fort promenade will be 2,640 m long and have an area of 13,750 sq m.
The final project is to convert a stretch of the Galali coast, which is about 2.5 km in length, into a public beach with all necessary facilities and services. The project will cost BD30,000.
