Powerscreen helps put waste to good use

01 December 2004

Powerscreen International – a leading Irish manufacturer of mobile screens – is promoting its latest range of mid-sized trommels for waste segregation, which it says is the most versatile of its kind available today.

“The latest in the range – the Orion 1400 and Phoenix 1200 and 1600 – feature a number of innovations for extra productivity, easy maintenance and simplicity of operation. Launched only recently, these mid-sized trommels are already site proven and selling well internationally,” says a company spokesman.
Specifically designed for waste treatment and recycling, the Powerscreen’s range of trommels is based on the principle of a cylindrical rotating screen with a receiving hopper and feed conveyor at one end and a stockpiling conveyor for the processed materials at the other.
“The Powerscreen trommel range is at work throughout the world, screening a variety of mixed waste to extract re-useable materials such as topsoil, compost, wood pulp and so-on,” he says.
Elaborating on the range he says: “Available in mobile, static, diesel engine and electrically-powered versions, the range offers customers the widest possible range of options. Powerscreen’s trommel drum four-wheel drive system enhances performance by increasing power and reducing wear, with the great advantage of a resulting low maintenance requirement,” he says.
“For heavy-duty recycling applications, Powerscreen offers its best-selling Warrior range. With outputs of up to 500 tonnes per hour – depending on the materials being processed – these flatbed screening plants are capable of dealing with large items such as tree stumps, boulders and lumps of concrete and are predominantly suited to the screening, separation and stockpiling of construction and demolition waste, as well as quarried or face-blasted rock, aggregates and coal.
“With many screen type options, including heavy-duty finger screens, the Warrior range will gladly accept heavy waste, efficiently screen separating and splitting to three conveyors to produce materials, which can be reused or recycled through additional processes such as crushing. Again, static and crawler tracked mobile versions are available.

Landfill applications
“Landfill is an area where waste minimisation is fast becoming a vital aspect of waste management – especially where domestic waste is concerned. In such applications, where volume has to be reduced as much as possible, Powerscreen has developed a powerful shredding machine, specifically designed for the task and ruggedly constructed to work in the toughest environments.
“The Powershredder 1800 produces a consistent and uniform material sizing with a range of knives, hooks and combs to match. Operationally, the shredder is quiet, has low dust emission level and is compact enough for the most restricted of sites.
“At the ‘finer’ end of the recycling processes, Powerscreen manufactures a range of density separators, which utilise blown air or water to separate and diffuse pollutants such as plastics and polystyrene from waste in its final stage of processing. Additionally, Powerscreen can also provide customised conveyor picking stations for manual removal of other unwanted materials in a waste treatment plant,” he adds.

Working together
“Each individual machine has been designed and constructed to either work as a single unit or, where the variety and mix of the waste dictates, in tandem to create a waste processing plant of any configuration.
“For example, in Hong Kong, Powerscreen recycling machines have been installed in what is believed to be the world’s largest landfill site and the whole package was put together by Powerscreen, working closely with its regional dealer Conquip Engineering Company Limited and the customer.
“At Green Valley Landfill Site, inert construction and demolition waste is processed, reduced, cleansed and screened in order to separate recyclable materials for re-use prior to the remaining waste being added to the landfill. Stone and concrete is removed for crushing for use as sub-base; soil fines are removed and used daily for landfill coverage.
"Mid-sized stones are utilised in the landfill linings with the larger stone being put to good use, creating and maintaining the haul roads. Timber and metals, having been separated and sorted, are sold on with the remaining and non-useable reduced waste going to the landfill.
“Powerscreen’s impressive installation at Green Valley Landfill Site is capable of treating up to 130 tonnes of material per hour and is a splendid example of best practice in recycling, reclamation and waste management,” the spokesman adds.
Powerscreen International was established in 1966 with its headquarters and manufacturing facility in Dungannon, Tyrone, Northern Ireland.
Originally specialising in the design and manufacture of mobile screening, washing and stockpiling equipment for the aggregates, coal and quarrying industries, these innovative machines propelled the mining, quarrying and aggregate extraction industries into a new era and so established Powerscreen as the world brand leader.
Today, Powerscreen’s premises in Dungannon has grown spectacularly, with numerous production lines for a wide variety of equipment and, specifically, a huge range of machinery for the recycling and waste management industries.
Powerscreen recycling equipment is primarily concerned with preserving the earth’s natural resources by minimising the volume of waste material going to landfill and, through the processes of screening, washing and separation, extracting material to create recycled useable products such as secondary aggregates, topsoil, loam and compost (providing a profit potential for the recycler).
Employing a workforce in excess of 400 personnel involved in design, production, research and development, sales and marketing, quality management and after sales product support, Powerscreen exports to more than 40 countries with 100 appointed dealerships throughout the world.
Mohammed Jalal and Sons is the Powerscreen distributor in Bahrain.
Powerscreen is a member company within the international Terex Corporation, which has a portfolio of products and services that covers the recycling, quarrying, mining, materials handling, heavy plant and construction industry.
