Green systems cope with rugged locations

01 July 2005

Ingersoll-Rand (IR) has recently launched its new Environmental Generator range, which are said to offer superior long run and containment capability for demanding applications in the equipment rental and construction markets, as well as outdoor power for concerts and other leisure and entertainment events.

Offering 10 to 500 kVA of prime power, the new rugged generators also address a need for quieter products and reduced size (up to 36 per cent smaller than previous models), says a spokesman for the manufacturer.
“For environmental safety, the generator offers a fully bunded, 110 per cent containment design to ensure that all operating fluids (fuel, oil and water) stay within the unit,” he says. “The full containment design includes a double-skin arrangement that acts as a retention tank to prevent spillage of fluids onto the ground.”
“All IR Environmental Generators have compact enclosures occupying the minimum of space and offering excellent sound attenuation for reduced noise level operation. In addition, the enclosures – which have a powdercoat paint finish to resist corrosion – are designed to minimise water intake,” the spokesman adds.
The Environmental Generators are equipped with large-capacity, doublewall fuel tanks, providing – for most models – running times in excess of 24 hours, thus extending operation between refuelling and reducing running costs, he says.
Other added value features include an integral sump pump, battery isolator and automatic safety shutdown.
The generators are fitted as standard with premium engine systems from Mitsubishi, John Deere and Volvo, providing the best value in power efficiency and reliability, delivering precise frequency control, while meeting TA Luft requirements for low  emissions, he points out.
Elaborating on other features of the new generators, the spokesman says: “The Auxiliary Winding Regulation Excitation Principle (AREP) technology utilised by the alternators on the generators offers the best motor starting in its class with an excellent short-circuit capability and voltage regulation under the most demanding loads. The latter is particularly useful when the generator is being used to start a large motor.
“The rugged design is fully tested in a rigorous ‘bump test’ devised by IR which every Environmental Generator must undergo. This test involves driving the generator around a bumpy track on the back of a trailer to prove its integrity. The Environmental Generators are, therefore, built to withstand dayin, dayout operation and are protected for work for long periods without attention.
“All the new Environmental Generators feature a single control panel positioned at the front of the machines, offering a number of operating and safety features. The four smaller models from the G16 to the G44 have an analogue control panel, while the 11 models from the G66 to the 6550 have the Intellisys digital control panel, which offers powerful diagnostic capabilities and the added benefit of a simpler looking panel for routine operation.”
“As well as being quality products, the new generators maintain all the advantages associated with owning an Ingersoll-Rand generator. From the initial enquiry right through to product support throughout its lifetime, all Ingersoll-Rand generators are backed by the company’s single-source supply of equipment and genuine replacement parts, aimed at providing customers with total peace of mind,” he adds.
Ingersoll-Rand offers a one-year or 2,000-hour warranty (whichever comes first) on the entire package, two years or 4,000 hours on the alternator and two years or 2000 hours on the engine. Engine warranty can be extended if the customer uses Ingersoll-Rand fluids and filters over the term of the extended warranty agreement.
“Overall, IR Environmental Generators offer low total lifetime costs. Over a typical replacement period of three to four years. the high reliability, low maintenance costs and impressive residual values ensure that IR generators are more cost effective than the equivalent competitor units,” he concludes.
Ingersoll-Rand is a global provider of products, services, and integrated solutions to industries as diverse as transportation, manufacturing, construction, and agriculture. The leading diversified industrial firm last month celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the merger of Ingersoll-Sergeant Drill Company and Rand Drill Company, which formed Ingersoll-Rand.
