CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: The Gate; the towers in Northern Village and the Iconic Towers.
01 October 2005
Sorouh Real Estate has announced the appointment of the lead design architects for the first phase of its landmark development project Shams Abu Dhabi on Al Reem Island, located off the northeastern shore of Abu Dhabi.
Arquitectonica has been appointed as the lead design architect for the first development plot in the project – The Gate – which comprises five impressive towers which form the southern entrance to the Shams Abu Dhabi development.
With four residential towers of 60 storeys and a single 75-storey mixed residential and commercial use tower, this plot encompasses 3,000 residential units with accompanying underground parking and environmental terraces. This plot represents a total of more than 1 million sq m of development space.
Aedas has been named the lead design architect for the second development plot which is generally referred to as the Northern or Upper Village. This residential cluster of buildings range from six to 35 storeys and will be bisected by a major canal. This neighbourhood is designed to be a slightly upscale residential area known for its serenity.
Perkins and Will has been appointed as the lead design architect for the third neighbourhood. This section is composed of several blocks dominated by two iconic towers at the northern tip of the development. These towers, shaped as if they open up and welcome the sky, represent the contemporary design and vision of the project. They will form the commercial centre of the adjoining Upper Village.
Shams Abu Dhabi will be 90 per cent residential, with the remainder being a mix of commercial, hotel, entertainment and institutional components.
The development will be implemented in stages, as individual developers contract with Sorouh to develop blocks within the overall project. The first phase will be completed in 2008 and the enitre project by 2011.
The overall project management and civil design contract was also awarded to RW Armstrong and Associates, who will be the prime consultant on the project.
At the recent Cityscape at the Dubai International Convention Centre, Sorouh Real Estate invited developers and investors in the first three plots of Shams Abu Dhabi development.
