Spacia keeps the humidity, heat out

01 December 2005

Spacia Australia, a leading insulated window glazing specialist, used the recent Big 5 show as an ideal platform to showcase its vacuum-insulated window glazing systems.

Known as Spacia, the product has been supplied to a number of projects in Asia, says Richard Lauder, senior manager.
The company, which made its debut at the show this year, was also on the lookout for agents in the Middle East region.
Elaborating on the product, Lauder says: “Used on a number of projects, Spacia is the world’s most innovative energy-efficient glazing offering outstanding thermal and sound insulation properties. It is much thinner and lighter than other insulated glazing units and is condensation free.
“The product was invented by Prof Richard Collins and team at the University of Sydney in 1989 and is manufactured by Nippon Sheet Glass Spacia of Japan.
“Spacia has been deployed in Japan since 1997 with well over half a million sq m of product now installed. It is supplied with a 10-year warranty for window applications and has a very thin vacuum layer between two sheets of glass. With a total thickness of as little as 6.2 mm, it can be installed into existing frames when renovating, allowing the original aesthetic to remain and keeping down the total cost.
“The product – which offers impressive wind-loading performance and strength-to-weight ratio compared to other insulated glazing units – can provide energy cost savings and thermal comfort in both heating and cooling climates. It also offers significant cost savings for tall buildings – through thinner and lighter glazing, lower-cost frames and installation – and the cost saving increases with building height.
“Spacia remains condensation-free inside and out even if it’s snowing outside or if it’s hot and humid. It is hermetically sealed and so condensation will never form on the inside surface of the glazing. It maintains perfect visibility and avoids pools of water building up beneath the window.
“These properties also make Spacia ideal for use in heater-less freezer and refrigerator showcase doors,” says Lauder.
