Dubai targets Metro line to Expo site by 2019
DUBAI, September 30, 2014
Dubai Metro Red Line extension to the Expo 2020 site will be ready for public use by 2019, said the chairman of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on the opening day of a major projects forum in Dubai, UAE.
"Infrastructure of the network around Al Maktoum International Airport will be ready by 2019. We have to finish one year before the event of the Expo to make sure that the system works very well," Mattar Al Tayer was quoted as saying at the Dubai International Project Management Forum by Emirates 24/7.
The Red Line features a 15-km-long connection to the World Expo site, which currently has no transportation network, the report said.
"More than 25 million multicultural visitors are expected to visit the event during a period of six months," he added.
"Improvements and additions are needed to our road network; bus and taxi fleets should be operated with dedicated lanes, site access through bus, taxi and on foot should be realised and parking facilities arranged,” Al Tayer explained, pointing out that Dh30 billion ($8.17 billion) will be need to develop the infrastructure of the emirate.
