MariMatic wins Makkah waste collection contract

RIYADH, July 29, 2020

MariMatic, a specialist in automated solid waste collection systems (AWCS) and vacuum conveying systems for underground waste collection, said it has been signed up to deploy its key MetroTaifun systems in the Saudi city of Makkah.

The latest design, build and operate contract from Umm Al Qura Development and Construction Company (UAQ) is for a new part of the city called Masar Makkah. It also includes operation and maintenance until the end of 2030, said a statement from MariMatic.

In Masar Makkah, the core components - walking boulevards - are equipped with waste bins and over 210 plots with hotels and hotel apartment buildings connected to a pipe network, it stated.

In addition, a new order with the Saudi Binladin Group (SBG) has been received, for the area of Mataf within the holy mosque. This area will be connected to the world’s largest Automatic Waste Collection System supplied by MariMatic.

With this, the recently secured contracts in Saudi Arabia has now risen to €60 million ($70.3 million), it added.

Under this new system, waste is collected by vacuum conveying to a transfer terminal, where the waste ends up in containers, said a company spokesman.

This relieves the complete area from litter and waste bins with disturbing waste trucks. The system is dimensioned for up to 300 tons of waste per day, he explained.

"Just imagine the amount of waste trucks driving around emptying waste bins, or the amount of personnel needed to service litter bins along the boulevard, he added.

According to him, the key to MariMatic’s energy efficient Automatic Waste Collection Systems is to use smaller diameter pipes, often 300 mm, instead of 500 mm, commonly required in the Middle East.

Also in these cases with the high capacity system, the same principle has been applied, by using 400 mm piping with MariMatic’s formator technology for up to 250 liter waste bags, instead of 600 mm piping used by the competitors, he noted.

Usage of smaller pipe diameter not only reduces energy consumption, but it also minimizes the possibility of blockages, as the waste easier fills up the pipe, giving higher vacuum force for conveying. The pipe systems are also built up with MariMatic’s patented Ring-Line configuration, allowing change of air flow direction, to facilitate removal of possible blockages, he added.

Recently, MariMatic was also awarded the contract of a system to a new neighborhood in the city of Amsterdam. The public tender was focused on technology, reliability, performance and quality, achieving a life cycle of 60 years. MariMatic’s technology and solutions achieved maximum scores.

MariMatic is a technology company, developing and marketing vacuum pipe conveying systems. Development of the products and solutions began in 1983 and since then, over 1000 systems have been delivered to over 40 countries.-TradeArabia News Service
