Siemens to power Alexandria’s 25,000 residential units

CAIRO, September 7, 2020

Siemens Energy said it has been selected by the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) to connect Bashaer El Khair City project in Alexandria city with the country’s national grid that will help supply electrical power to more than 25,000 residential units in over 250 apartment buildings and service centres.

As per the deal, Siemens Energy will be responsible for the design, engineering, construction, installation and commissioning of the 66/11-kilovolt station that will be delivered on a turnkey basis.

This includes gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), power transformer’s installation and commissioning, control systems as well as protection and telecommunication equipment. The project will be fast tracked and is expected to be operational in July 2021.

The new move is aimed at improving the resilience of Egypt’s power transmission network, said the statement from Siemens Energy.

Egypt has been working to strengthen and increase the reliability of the national grid to power the new cities and drive the country’s economic and social development.

The Bashaer El Khair, residential complex, is part of a national project to create new communities and provide quality homes for people living in informal communities or settlements in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, it added.

"Electrification of new cities is a big priority for Egypt and across the region, a topic that will continue to be emphasized to create more prosperous and greener cities," remarked Mahmoud Hanafy, Senior VP, Siemens Energy Transmission Solutions in the Middle East.

"This project comes as part of our commitment to support the government in strengthening the transmission capacity of the Egyptian electricity network," stated Hanafy.

"The project will help reinforce the grid and enhance power supplies to meet the increasing demand for electricity from residential and commercial consumers as a result of growing urbanization in Egypt," he added.

Emad Ghaly, Managing Director of Siemens Energy in Egypt, said: "An efficient and robust electricity network is an essential part of Egypt’s vision to drive long-term economic growth. We’re pleased to build on our long-lasting relationship with the EETC and be part of this project that will upgrade the lives of many in Alexandria."

To date, approximately 50 per cent of the power transmission network in Egypt is built using Siemens Energy’s technology, he added.-TradeArabia News Service
