Saudi Arabia completes restoration of ancient mosque in Aseer

RIYADH, 2 days ago

Saudi authorities have announced the successful restoration of the ancient Al Hosn Al Asfal (lower fort) Mosque that spans over 134 sqm area in Aseer Region.

The mosque, established 271 years ago, features a Sarat-style design and can accommodate 32 worshippers, reported SPA.

The Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques is prioritising the principles of sustainability, exemplified by the restoration of the mosque under its Phase Two development works.

The restoration was mainly to preserve the mosque's original design and geometric shape, while restoring its unique sustainable features, said senior officials.

These include rainwater collection and storage in the mosque's reservoir, which is then used in the ablution area, they stated.

A notable feature of the mosque is the "al-manzala" room, traditionally used to host travelers. Its construction reflects the urban fabric of upper mountain villages, characterized by stone construction and thick walls, stated the SPA report, citing the officials.

The mosque is adorned with white plaster, setting it apart from neighboring buildings.

Additionally, the Sarat style in urban patterns and composition is shaped by climatic conditions, local topography, and social and cultural influences, it added.
