GMU launches new dual PhD programme in Precision Medicine
DUBAI, April 8, 2021
Gulf Medical University’s has launched a new dual programme Doctor of Philosophy in Precision Medicine [PhD PM] by the College of Medicine and TRIPM. It has been accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), Ministry of Education, Higher Education Affairs, UAE.
The main aim of the dual PhD Programme in Precision Medicine is to develop scientists and researchers with a health professional background seeking to become researchers nationally and internationally in this changing field of health care.
Precision Medicine involves the application of omics sciences and systems biology to understand the causes of patients’ disease at the molecular level and utilise the information to design targeted treatments to address that individual disease process.
In essence, Precision Medicine is a medical model that proposes the customisation of healthcare with medical decisions, treatments, practice or products tailored to the individual or group of patients instead of one drug-fits all models.
The Chancellor of GMU Prof Hossam Hamdy said: “The PhD is a dual degree programme in collaboration with Paris-Saclay University, France. We have joined hands to promote international exchanges, increase scientific cooperation, development of research and higher education at GMU and provide value to the UAE community at large by also giving priority to UAE nationals to join this programme. University Paris Saclay is ranked in 2020 as number one university in France, 6 in Europe and 14th in the world.”
Prof Salem Chouaib, Director of the PhD programme added: “GMU Strategic Plan had identified Precision Medicine Research as its main research direction. This led to the development of the “Thumbay Research Institute for Precision Medicine (TRIPM)” with a research agenda, focusing on understanding the molecular, genetic and immunological basis of cancer, diabetics and cardiovascular diseases. The Doctorate School of Oncology Health at Paris Saclay will Host the students in more than 100 specialised labs.”
The dual PhD Programme in Precision Medicine has a broad scope and allows the PhD students to explore and develop through research, new knowledge leading to new diagnostics, treatments and prevention of diseases. The candidate will receive two PhD degrees, one from each institution. -- Tradearabia News Service
