New drug hope for sickle cell patients

MANAMA, December 2, 2015

Sickle cell sufferers have been urged to make the switch to a life-changing drug that could drastically reduce complications. More than 40 per cent of sufferers being cared for at the Genetic Blood Disease Centre in Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) are now taking Hydroxyurea, a chemotherapy drug with antiretroviral properties that was first made widely available in Bahrain earlier this year, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.
