Telecom Egypt, Ericsson use 5G for immersive sports experience

CAIRO, July 11, 2019

Telecom Egypt and Ericsson, a leading global communications service provider, have showcased two exciting demos for football fans in Egypt, based on concepts like augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR), as well as AI Object and face recognition, on a 5G network at the Alexandria stadium in Egypt.

The two companies are giving sports enthusiasts a front-row seat through these exciting new changes coming into play in the sporting experience at stadiums.

For broadcasters, fans, and athletes alike, Ericsson’s leading technologies enrich the sporting experience, bringing people closer to the action, and creating new immersive ways to showcase the commitment, excitement, and teamwork of sports, said a statement from the company.

For a team playing before a packed stadium or a lonesome runner on a forest track, connectivity and mobility enable new values in an emerging internet of sport, it said.

Engineer Adel Hamed, managing director and chief executive officer, Telecom Egypt, said: “Consumers are always seeking new ways to experience their favourite sports content. Through the evolution of technology, we have the potential to push boundaries and take the consumer to the heart of the game itself.”

“Alexandria stadium is a great venue to demonstrate how far we have come technologically, and why it will matter to fans,” he added.

Telecom Egypt and Ericsson are live with a full-stack telco cloud infrastructure with the successful deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) proof of concept, focusing on transforming the wireless network and providing a 5G-ready core.

Rafiah Ibrahim, head, Ericsson Middle East and Africa, said: “We are happy to join Telecom Egypt and inspire football fans with a sneak-peek into the future.”

“This partnership marks as a milestone in our long-standing partnership, bringing our innovative technologies to elevate the consumer experience and pave the way for 5G,” he said.

The objective is to demonstrate cloud use cases that enable Telecom Egypt to have faster time to market, offer high-quality user experiences and easily deploy ICT services such as voice over LTE (VoLTE), machine to machine (M2M), rich communication services (RCS) and enterprise solutions, it stated. – TradeArabia News Service
