IS claims Istanbul shooting; killer still at large

ISTANBUL, January 3, 2017

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the New Year's attack at the Reina nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey that left 39 people dead and scores wounded, media sources reported.

"In continuation of the blessed operations which ISIS carries out against Turkey, a soldier of the brave caliphate attacked one of the most popular nightclubs while Christians were celebrating their holiday," IS said in a statement made on Twitter, according to CNN, adding that the tweet could not be independently verified.

Turkish authorities said they detained eight people in connection with the attack, but a manhunt for the gunman continued on Monday.

Meanwhile, investigators have found the fingerprints of the suspect and know what he looks like, Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said Monday.

Turkish state-run media say police provided a photo of the suspect in the Istanbul nightclub attack.

"We will find him, no delay," Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said.
