AI and human synergy ‘to shape a sustainable future’

The final day of the two-day Knowledge Summit 2024 in Dubai featured a series of insightful panel discussions that highlighted topics, including sustainable development, environmental innovations and the advantages of using AI.
The sessions received substantial attention from the audience, marking the conclusion of the region’s key annual knowledge gathering.
The second session entitled ‘AI Readiness: Building the Future Ecosystem’ featured key speakers including Matar AlHemeiri, Chief Executive, Digital Dubai Government Establishment; Harrison Lung, Group Chief Strategy Officer at e&; Dr Hanan Salam, Co-Founder of Women in AI and Assistant Professor, Director of SMART Lab at NYUAD; and Priya Lakhani Founder and CEO of CENTURY Tech. The session was moderated by Ethar Eltinay, Founder and Policy Advisor of ThinkTank Initiative.
Robust foundation for AI
Speakers highlighted various methods for building a robust foundation for artificial intelligence (AI) and the significance of establishing AI data and computing centres within modern infrastructure. Furthermore, they shared several valuable insights and concepts linked to the management and protection of AI data, the shift to AI-driven systems, and the integration of AI and human intelligence to promote a compliant and robust ecosystem.
The third session titled ‘Driving Sustainable Development and Shaping the Future’ was presented by Prof Jeffrey Sachs, Economist, Public Policy Analyst, and Professor at Columbia University. During the session, Prof Sachs explored the role of innovative financing in attaining sustainable development goals (SDGs). Furthermore, he underscored a wide array of strategies to encourage global collaborations among countries to mitigate the impact of climate change, while pointing out the need to equip communities with knowledge and skills to implement these development plans.
During the fourth session entitled ‘Eco-innovations for a Sustainable Future’, Dr Hosni Ghedira, Professor of Practice at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI); Dr Patrick Paul Walsh, Vice President and Director of the SDG Academy, UNSDSN; Baharash Bagherian, CEO of URB and Katarina Hasbani, Founder of Enrupt, participated as key speakers. The session was moderated by renowned media personality Naoufer Ramoul from Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI).
The session involved a broad discussion on the means of leveraging AI for environmental monitoring and data collection. The participants also explored different ways to improve resource management by integrating AI analytics and human decision-making. In addition, they underscored the relevance of developing a collaborative approach for AI technologies and human intelligence to support environmental innovations.
Accurate and objective approach
The fifth session themed ‘AI: A Double-Edged Sword’ was led by Moataz Mashal, an entrepreneur, international speaker, and life and business strategist. During the session, he explained an accurate and objective approach to using AI. He also highlighted its notable impact on human decision-making along with strategies for tackling AI-driven knowledge disruption. Mashal also pointed out the importance of aligning the future with the evolving landscape shaped by AI.
The closing ceremony featured a video presentation with the key highlights of the summit, which was followed by the honouring of the partners. The two-day event, which was filled with various activities and discussions, made a substantial contribution to the advancement of the intellectual and knowledge landscape.
