UAE plans ‘halal’ certification mark on food products
DUBAI, October 31, 2014
The UAE is set to have the ‘Halal National Mark’ certification for food products to ensure they are in line with shariah law, according to a report.
The Dubai Municipality and the Emirates Standardisation and Metrology Authority (Esma) will work to set it up and was revealed at the 10th World Islamic Economic Forum in Dubai, said the Emirates 24/7 report.
"The certification mark is launched as part of the UAE Scheme for Halal Products which will be mandatorily applied as per the resolution No (10) issued by the Federal Cabinet in 2014,” Hussain Nasser Lootah, director general of the Dubai Municipality, was quoted as saying.
The process will help regulate and certify the halal products, said the report.
"According to the regulation, the halal certificate is a document certifying that the product, service or their respective schemes are shariah-compliant,” said Lootah.
"This includes halal slaughtering certificates, certificates of establishments, farms, slaughterhouses and facilities classified as 'halal,' certificates of raw food materials, food additives, ingredients with meat derivatives, extracts, as well as animal smells, gelatine, fats, oils and their derivatives,” he added.
