Kuwait's government resigns amid deep political crisis
KUWAIT CITY , April 6, 2022
Kuwait's government submitted its resignation on Tuesday, reported Kuwait News Agency (Kuna), ahead of a no-confidence vote against the prime minister in parliament, amid a lengthy political feud that has hindered fiscal reform in the Gulf oil producer.
Sheikh Mishal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, Crown Prince of the State of Kuwait, who took over most of the ruling emir's duties late last year, received the government's letter of resignation from Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al Khalid, the state news agency reported.
The government's resignation comes less than three months after it was sworn in, it added.
On November 23, 2021, the Kuwaiti Crown Prince issued an order on behalf of the Emir to appoint Sheikh Sabah as prime minister and assign him to form a government and consequently on December 28, he formed a new government.
Sheikh Sabah, a member of the ruling Al Sabah family and premier since late 2019, has faced a combative legislature as the head of successive cabinets, with opposition MPs bent on questioning him over issues including perceived corruption, reported Reuters.
The vote in parliament, called a non-cooperation motion, was scheduled for Wednesday. The current government was appointed in December, the third in 2021 as the standoff with the elected parliament dragged on, stated the report.
It was the second time a government headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah has resigned this year in the feud with the elected parliament, it added.
