FANR staff completes key Nawah certification programme
ABU DHABI, March 13, 2022
UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) said eight of its employees have completed the senior reactor operator management certification programme in cooperation with Nawah Energy Company.
The 25-week intensive training programme is aimed at strengthening participants' knowledge and inspection skills of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant and its systems. The programme will equip FANR's staff with the competencies needed to carry out its power plant regulatory oversight.
"Investing in building Emirati nuclear expertise is pivotal for the sustainability of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme to attain the nation's ambitious goals," remarked Christer Viktorsson, Director-General of the FANR.
"The intensive training programme complements FANR's efforts to have competent Emirati experts carrying out regulatory oversight at the nuclear power plant," stated Viktorsson.
A senior reactor operator provides direct oversight and direction to Reactor Operators in the main control room and Local Equipment Operators in the field.
They are responsible for a higher and broader level of knowledge and leadership skills necessary to maintain the nuclear plant within limits during normal operations and plant evolutions.
The knowledge-intensive certification programme comprises theoretical classes on nuclear power and Barakah Nuclear Power Plant systems followed by simulator training at Nawah.
Ensuring human sustainability of the nuclear programme is paramount. FANR is developing necessary training programmes to help build competencies among Emiratis needed in the nuclear sector.
Currently, FANR employs over 245 staff, of which 72% are Emiratis, and many of them hold key technical positions in nuclear safety, nuclear security, safeguards and radiation protection.-TradeArabia News Service
