WGS unveils winners of UK green energy start-up contest

DUBAI, March 29, 2022

The winners of a UK government competition to drive growth in the renewable energy start-up sector have been revealed at the Global Energy Forum, part of the World Government Summit (WGS2022) in Dubai.

The Green Builders of Tomorrow, organised by the UK Department for International Trade (DIT) in partnership with Octopus Group, pitched for investments with ideas to accelerate the path to Net-Zero and a sustainable world.

Gus Wiseman, Deputy Director of Investment Opportunities & Propositions at DIT, introduced the competition and its objectives, while Chris Hulatt, co-founder of the Octopus Group, reinforced the group’s mission to invest in people and ideas which change the world for the better.

Jo Parker-Swift, CEO of Solivus – one of the startups participating in the competition, said: “We are on a mission to make it as easy as possible for mega-buildings and home owners to decarbonise by installing our innovative thin-film solar solutions.

“We are pioneering truly sustainable products for a fast-evolving market. We want to be pivotal in reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources. We help generate more energy in smaller pace.”

Pitching their solution, Ian Mackenzie, Founder and CEO of Trojan Energy, said the company developed the Trojan Electric Vehicle Charging System to eliminate residual clutter on the pavement.

He said: “We have a charge point embedded into the pavement. We do our bit for the global effort to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality by supporting electrification and the transition to renewable energy.”

Julie Chen, CEO of The Cheeky Panda, emphasised her company’s commitment to bring sustainability to the mass market using natural products that are safe for environment. She said: “Our products, including toilet paper, tissues, wipes are available in 25 markets. We primarily focus on bamboo products because of its eco-friendly attributes.”

Ernst Van Orsouw, CEO of Roslin Technologies, said his company’s mission is to advance disruptive biotechnologies to improve protein production. He said: “We apply new biotechnologies to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable food system. For instance, the cultivated meat market is heating up and to make it viable it needs investments.”

Ben Turner, CEO of Origen Power, said that 400 tonnes of CO2 is currently emitted into the atmosphere each year by the lime industry. He said: “Our technology can eliminate these emissions by building a cleaner future which will help to clean up the carbon dioxide emissions of our past. Our zero-carbon lime can be used to remove billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.”

In the pitches, all the companies unveiled plans of expansion across the globe, reiterating their commitment to help tackle climate change and achieving international net-zero goals in the years to come. – TradeArabia News Service
