No middle seats for solo women on Vistara flights

NEW DELHI, August 2, 2017

Solo women travellers flying with Indian airline Vistara can bid goodbye to the dreaded middle seat option as the airline has rolled out a new service where women flying alone will only be allotted window or aisle seats, said a report.

The move, which is part of its Woman Flyer initiative, will also see the airline help solo women travellers with their bags, and escort them to and from their ground transportation as well, said a report in Times of India.

The new service, which was launched on Women's Day in March, has recorded an average 70-100 women passengers already using the service each day.

"We observed the preferences of solo women travellers on our flights, and noticed that they often sought assistance on ground upon arrival at their destinations, mostly either regarding their baggage or to reconfirm the safest and most reliable options for airport transfers, said the report citing Sanjiv Kapoor, chief strategy and commercial officer, Vistara, as saying.

"As part of this optional service, solo women travellers are not assigned middle seats, again based on feedback and intuitive thoughtfulness," he said.

In order to avail help with baggage or with transport, passengers need to approach Vistara staff at baggage claim area holding a #VistaraWomanFlyer placard, he said, adding that they will also be extended help with booking a taxi and escorted up to the vehicle.
