The 9th UN World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism marked a significant milestone for Bahrain as it hosted the event for the first time in the region, highlighting the Kingdom’s commitment to becoming a global leader in culinary tourism, reported BNA. 

 

Speaking on the second day of the forum, Sarah Buhiji, CEO of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), underscored the transformative potential of gastronomy tourism in driving economic growth, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering global connections. 

 

"Today, we celebrate the powerful connection between gastronomy and tourism and its transformative impact here in Bahrain," remarked Buhiji. 

 

"This forum underscores our commitment to positioning Bahrain as a global leader in culinary tourism, inviting you to explore our rich history, diverse cultures, and exceptional dining experiences," she stated. 

 

Buhiji highlighted the alignment of Bahrain’s gastronomy tourism initiatives with the Bahrain Economic Vision 2030, which prioritises a balanced and sustainable economy. 

 

"Our heritage as a trading hub has made Bahrain a vibrant crossroads of culinary traditions from around the world," she added. 

 

Gastronomy tourism has been placed at the heart of Bahrain’s Tourism Strategy for 2022-2026, with a focus on boosting international visitors, creating job opportunities, and elevating Bahrain's reputation on the global tourism stage, said the BNA report. 

 

Buhiji noted that the sector has already seen substantial growth, generating thousands of jobs, particularly in the hospitality and culinary fields, and encouraging more Bahrainis to step into leadership roles within the industry. 

 

"Our hospitality industry has experienced extraordinary growth and attracted significant investments, offering a wide range of accommodations that make Bahrain an appealing destination for tourists," she said. "This expansion has opened up new career opportunities for our youth in hospitality and tourism," he stated. 

 

Buhiji celebrated Bahrain’s rich culinary heritage, describing it as a “beautiful fusion of East and West.” 

 

She highlighted the importance of the Kingdom’s iconic dishes, which reflect its cultural identity while offering visitors a chance to explore its history and diversity. 

 

She also commended the collaborative efforts of educational institutions, training centres, and private sector partners in preparing the next generation of hospitality professionals. “In Bahrain, our tourism and hospitality sectors empower young Bahrainis to develop their skills and emerge as global leaders,” she said. 

 

Calling for collective action, Buhiji urged stakeholders to leverage gastronomy tourism as a driver of growth, sustainability, and cultural exchange. “Let this event ignite our passion for a thriving gastronomy tourism sector. Together, let’s enhance the role of food in tourism, create new opportunities for growth, job creation, and cultural exchange, and build a sustainable and inclusive global tourism industry that honours our shared culinary heritage,” she said.
